Lyrics

Don’t Let Nobody
Words & Music By: Donald Stephan Jones
March 2009

When I was fifteen my Mama left home she never came back and never called home
My daddy tried hard to keep me in check, but when he was drinking his heart went to shit
So I hit the road when I was seventeen hoped a freight train down to New Orleans
I met a Madam that took me under wing, she loved me like a son, and taught me one thing

Learn how to know it, before you want it
Make sure you have it, before you give it
And you’ve got to own it, before you can sell it
And don’t let nobody steal your soul

I joined the Army, when I turned nineteen, learned how to shoot, and smoke like fiend
They sent me to Bagdad, to act like a soldier, I saw my friend get shot in the back
In-between dust storms, and deadly car bombs, I survived the battles til they sent me home
They gave me a metal, that made me feel proud, I thought about the madam that had taught me well.

Learn how to know it, before you want it
Make sure you have it, before you give it
You’ve got to own it, before you can sell it
And don’t let nobody steal your soul

Instrumental

I got a letter, yellow and torn
It read,
Last night she passed away in her sleep
She talked about you, like you were her son
And she was proud, of the man you’ve become
Cause,

You learned to know it, before you want it
You always had it, before you gave it
And you never sold it, before you owned it
And you didn’t let nobody steal your soul

Don’t let nobody
Don’t let nobody
Don’t let nobody steal your soul…..
